From Video Game To Board Game: The Rise Of Tabletop Play

Of course, if you have a limitless supply of Guild Ball tokens already, you’ll no doubt know just how popular board game versions of video games have now become. But if you’re new to this particular pastime, it could well be something of a surprise. In the digital age, we all simply love plugging in our consoles, sticking on our headphones and taking on an opposing team separated by a TV or computer screen, right?

Well, it seems this is no longer the case and anyone who thinks that gaming is an antisocial pursuit really couldn’t be more wrong. Developers are now turning up in their droves to transform video games into board games and really, it’s not that hard to see why. They’ve already got a readymade fan base to take advantage of so switching genres isn’t so much of a risk – players will invest if they already enjoy playing the video game. Job done!

Take Stockport-based Steamforged Games as a prime example of a company that’s really capitalising on this particular idea. The brand – which is behind tabletop fantasy medieval football game Guild Ball – is now looking to expand its offering with a Dark Souls board game, following a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign.

The Kickstarter project was actually launched on April 19th this year with an initial goal of £50,000 and the fact that it reached its funding goal in a mere three minutes just goes to show how popular board games actually are at the moment. Later on April 19th, Steamforged Games logged onto the Kickstarter site to confirm they’d already reached £200,000! Within 24 hours, they’d hit more than $1 million.

Now, people are being invited to head to The Headingley Experience in Leeds between November 25th and 27th to try out the full play-through of the Dark Souls board game. Will you be there? Let us know!
