Hobby HQ

After having a blast at the UK Games Expo, we’ve been catching up on design work and fulfilling orders. But we did find some time for hobby…

As always, the UKGE was a spectacular window into how rich and deep the industry is right now. Innovation was everywhere, and what struck me, as primarily a miniature wargamer, was how the standard of tabletop models across the board has increased very sharply in the last few years. Excellent sculpts are not rare anymore. They’re everywhere.

As any sci-fi wargamer will attest, you can never have too many snipers.

This is partly why I came back from Salute with so many bags and so much shame. At the UKGE, I showed a bit more restraint. I did end up with a very cool griffon model from Reaper, which I'm going to set up opposite a wyvern from the same company. This model is also worth getting if you're looking for affordable and awesome wings for a conversion!

Our attempts to get our Age of Sigmar armies to the tabletop continue apace. The workshop's Nighthaunt army has a new member, with Lady Olynder, the Mortarch of Grief finally assembled.

This miniature is astonishing. The way the vines creep up through the hollow, spectral body and around the ornate model, while two ghoulish aides float alongside, is mind-blowing. As fun as the game is, I think it's safe to say that Age of Sigmar's main draw is the models. Olynder was a lot of fun to build, and I can't wait to paint her.

Another exciting UKGE purchase was one that I've had my eye on for ages. With a few local players getting back into X-Wing I felt it was time to finally take the dive into second edition. I've got a fairly big tub of models left over from 1.0, so getting all these cards, dials and bases in the upgrade kit meant that I could get straight back into the game.

Boba Fett is now ready to rock once more! It's nice to be able to get all my ships back on the table. As you can see, this one was modified with a couple of vanes, a salvage claw and a laser cannon that swivels on a magnet on the underside of the hull.

Next week, we hope to have some more paint-jobs to show you, but time has been a little scarce lately!

That's it for us - as I say, we've been a little preoccupied what with fires and national gaming events! How about you? What have you been building and painting?

While you're here, don't miss out on our Expo sale! Running until the 17th of June, it includes discounts across dozens of products... check out the deal on Hive Walls!
