Hobby HQ

Every Tuesday our Hobby HQ blog post sums up what we've been doing outside of our dayjobs. We share pictures of what we've built and painted, including work in progress projects. We'd love to see some of your work, too!

One of my favourite parts of the hobby is building and painting miniatures. I find it's a genuinely therapeutic process that helps calm the mind, particularly when you're having trouble winding down after a busy day. It's especially enjoyable when you're excited about a specific game system, and can't wait to get those colours down so you can look good while you're losing (if your dice are anything like mine)!

There's been a lot of excitement around Infinity and Age of Sigmar at the Studios, and this week's Hobby HQ reflects that. Abi smashed out some superb Stormcast Eternals, while myself and Grantt have been immersed in getting our new Infinity armies ready for battle.

First up, I'm not sure if it was Sigmar or some other guy who said "we will fight them on the beaches," but Abi's Stormcast have not only been given a gorgeous lick of paint, they've also got some nice sea shells added to their bases. "One of the benefits of living on the beach," says Abi. I love this creative approach, using things that you won't necessarily find in a bitz box to add character to a model. These warriors look just about ready to put the hammer down on some bad guys!

She's also got an undercoat down on the recently-purchased Storm Strike box.

Grantt's assembled and undercoated his ALEPH army. Focusing on the elite, high-tech Operations Subsection sectorial, he's preparing a tasty army featuring Dakini and a Rudra Gunbot. That's a fair amount of firepower mustered together in one pic!

The Rudra is such a cool model. Don't let that little face fool you; this thing will chew you up. And with a durable profile, even if you beat it in the face-to-face roll, it will be shrugging off much of what you throw at it. Be afraid!

Those who checked in with last Tuesday's Hobby HQ post will know that I'm enrolled in a casual(ish) painting competition at Hydra, home of the Totally Crit Infinity podcast. I decided early on that I would be painting a force of Pan Oceania knights and a Cutter TAG that I got at Salute. Determined to push myself with the airbrush I went for a crazy colour scheme that would yank me out of my comfort zone.

Cutter Infinity

This was a challenge. To achieve what I hoped would be the desired effect, I undercoated the model in a dark blue, before approaching it from one side with purple.

Since highlights and other detail work would mask or at least draw attention away from this scheme, I went all-in at this stage. Then, still feeling a little nervous, I came at the mini from the other side with a nice, bright blue.

The end result was, fortunately, pretty close to the vision I had when I was planning the project. Feeling adventurous, I made the call to try this on a smaller scale with the knights... with some glowing green effects on the swords. This was a lot of fun, and I learned a great deal as I was going. There's a fair amount of detail still to do but overall I'm pretty happy with how this is turning out.

So what projects have you all been working on? Show us your pics, and feel free to share any tips you have for working with an airbrush! And happy hobbying!
