Robot Wars To Return For Christmas Special

Robot Wars To Return For Christmas Special

You’ve woken up on Christmas morning, you’ve got your Star Wars armada, could things get any better?

Yes actually they could! Children of the 90s will be pleased to hear that Robot Wars is set to return to BBC2 for a yuletide instalment.

Dara O’Briain and Angela Scanlon will front the show, which will be broadcast in an hour long episode during the Christmas period.

They are set to be joined by famous faces who will clash the robots they have designed, created alongside an expert robot maker. They will then face the terrifying house robots in the arena including: Sir Killalot, Matilda, Shunt and Dead Metal.

The original TV programme ran from 1998-2004 and returned earlier this year, broadcast from Robot Wars’ custom-built Glasgow arena.

Though it has been off our screens for a long time, the desire to watch homemade robots failing embarrassingly on live television, has never really gone away.

Cult from the beginning, it was the subject of many in jokes in the industry when it was originally fronted by Craig Charles and Philippa Forester. There’s even an episode of Spaced based around two rival amateur Robot Wars teams.

If you are watching this Christmas, get up to speed with the rules.

A robot can lose by:

  • Being immobile for 30 seconds could be counted 'out' and turned over to the house robots for further ‘punishment.’ This reduced to 10 seconds in the 8th
  • Being flipped out of the arena.
  • Falling into the ‘Pit of Oblivion’.
  • Finally, if none of the above happens, a panel of three judges score the competitors on style, control, damage, and aggression.
